Lower Greensand Sponges from the Faringdon Sponge Gravels, UK
Species often available from this location are Raphidonema sp. and Corynella sp. Both are Cretaceous, Lower Greensand, and found in Faringdon, Berkshire. Many sponges form in what are called "Cigar" tubes due to their resemblance to the thoroughly modern Tobacco kind. Well-preserved fossil sponges from about 580 million years ago in the Ediacaran period (This period lasted from 635–541 Million years ago).
