Polished Cetiosaurus mogrebiensis Sauropod Dinosaur Bone slices from Atlas Mountains
These are sections of dinosaur bone that have been cut and polished from weathered blocks of broken bone found in the Atlas Mountains, El Mers Formation Boulemane, Morocco. Middle Jurassic, 165-170 million years old
Rather than nice pieces of dinosaur bone left to erode and dissolve, they have been given a little polishing to bring out the bone structure. Identifiable bones are never cut and polished. only blocks of weathered and broken bone. This is a good chance to study the bone structure of dinosaurs that would otherwise be impossible.
In 1927, H. Termier discovered large dinosaur bones. Further expeditions in 1940 and 1941, led by Lapparent, uncovered additional bones likely belonging to the same species. These were classified as "Cetiosaurus" mogrebiensis, named after the Maghreb region in Northwest Africa.
"Cetiosaurus" mogrebiensis is believed to be an early sauropod, not part of Neosauropoda, and possibly related to basal Eusauropods like Cetiosaurids and Turiasaurs.
During the Middle Jurassic period, "Cetiosaurus" mogrebiensis inhabited the El Mers region alongside various dinosaurs such as the armored Adratiklit, Spicomellus, the early tetanuran "Megalosaurus" mersiensis, and potentially Atlasaurus. It also shared its environment with Semionotid fish and Teleosaurids.
